The origin of the village of Obidos dates back to the 1st century, to the town of Eburobrittium. In this city passed Romans, Visigoths, and Arabs. The village of Óbidos has an enormous architecture, religion and history heritage. Many monarchs passed through these lands where they left a landmark, which the village proudly maintains.
The charm of this village has been preserved over the centuries and make it a magnificent holidays destination because of their monuments, winding streets and small houses with characteristic windows and balconies full of flowers. The whole historic setting transmits a journey back in time to the days when the monarchy visited the village.
Here you can visit the Óbidos Castle, classified as a National Monument, which was converted into a guesthouse.
The Door of the Village dates back to the 17th century, characterized by the tile of the 18th century and by the chapel-oratory with balcony of the 17th century. “The Virgin Our Lady was conceived without original sin” is the inscription that is on the main door of the village of Óbidos. This inscription was placed under the orders of King João IV, as a way of gratitude for the protection of the Patroness, in 1640. The Villa’s Gate is connected to Poço by Rua Direita, the main street of the village.
You can also take advantage to visit the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, the Church of Santa Maria, the Church of Misericórdia, the Chapel of S. Martinho, the Sanctuary of Senhor da Pedra and the Municipal Museum.
